ARAW NG KAGITINGAN ULTRA - MARATHON 114 KM (A Tribute To World War II Veterans)

HomeA Tribute Run for Bataan War Patriots
The only privately-initiated 114-kilometer non-competitive relay ultra-marathon honoring the Bataan Patriots of World War II was started by 29 members of the San Fernando Runners Unlimited, Inc. (SAFER RUN) led by founding organizer Ed Paez on April 8 and 9, 1986. It retraced the infamous 1942 Death March Trail from the shrine’s Kilometer Post 0 Marker in Mariveles, Bataan up to the City of San Fernando (Pampanga). Just like the War Heroes of old, who rode bagons on their way to Capas, Tarlac, the modern-day marchers used their back-up vehicles in going to the town’s train station. From here, they ended the final 12-kilometer route to Camp O’Donnel (Capas National Memorial Shrine), for the closing rites. .

CL Tribute Run for WW II vets cited by PSA

THE Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) cited Central Luzon's ARAW NG KAGITINGAN Ultra-Marathon (A Tribute To World War II Veterans) during its Awards Night to held last March 5, 2011 at the Manila Hotel, Rizal Park, Manila.
The non-competitive relay-run was initiated by sportswriter Edmundo Paez, a retired information officer of the Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources - Gitnang Luzon and the prexy of the country's oldest running club - the San Fernando Runners Unlimited, Inc. (SAFER RUN), more than a month after the bloodless EDSA People's Power Revolution, April 8 and 9, 1986.
On that year, Paez, the only Gawad Oscar M. Florendo awardee of the region, Bandera national tabloid's 2006 Super Pinoy, and three-time Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines honoree, led a 29-man SAFER RUN ultra-runners for the first retracing of the dreaded 102-kilometer March.
It started at the Death March Kilometer Post 0 Marker in Mariveles, Bataan and then traversed the road to Limay,Orion, Pilar, Balanga City, Abucay, Samal, Orani, a part of Dinalupihan and stayed overnight at Lubao, Pampanga and then ended at the City of San Fernando, via Guagua and Bacolor.
Later on, the Patriotic runners completed the 114-kilometer route by riding their back-up vehicles from San Fernando up to Sto. Domingo, Capas, Tarlac, just like the veterans who rode "bagons", for the final 12-kilometer run up to the Capas National Shrine or Camp O'Donnell. On April 8 and 9, 2011, the 26th staging of the Patriotic Run for our War Heroes will be seen again in the Central Luzon highways, with the Provincial government of Pampanga, City of San Fernando, towns of Lubao, Bacolor and Mariveles, Bataan rolling the traditional "red carpet" for the "modern-day marchers."
The List of PSA Awardees -Athletes of the Year - Django Bustamante, Dennis Orcullo, Rey Saludar & Biboy Rivera; PSA Presidential Achievement Award - Azkals; Executive of the Year - Dan Palami; Major Awardees - Poomase Team; Women's Basketball Team; Men's Chess Team; Warren Kiamco; Miguel Tabuena, Annie Albania; Nonito Donaire, Jr.; Ana Julaton; Donnie Nietes; Angelo Que; James Yap; RR Garcia; Yes Pogi & Jesse Guci; NSA of the Year - ABAP; Hall of Fame - Bata Reyes & Florencio Campomanes; Lifetime Achievement Award - Carlos Padilla & Baby Dalupan; Tony Siddayao Awards -Kiefer Ravena; Melvinne Alcala; Andie Unson; John Keitley Tan & Jerrick Mitra; PSA Citations- Philippine Patriots; Davis Cup; Ateneo de Manila University (Eagles & Eaglets); San Beda College;Kenneth San Andres; Marion Stockinger; Ronald Salvador; Artemio Murakami; Cyna Rodriguez; Mia Piccio; Smart Sports; ICTSI; Traithlon Association of the Philippines; Philippine Taekwondo Association; National MILO Marathon; ARAW ng Kagitingan Ultra-Marathon (A Tribute To World War II Veterans) and Jerrick Ternida.
